Description

Very rare and original, 1896 Complete Deck of American Actors and Actresses of the Theatrical Stage Playing Cards featuring photographic portraits of 65 different stars of the American Theater. The Deck is titled on the slip-case type Box “The Stage Playing Cards” and was manufactured by The United States Playing Card Company in 1896.
Each of the 53 Playing Cards measure approx. 2 1/2" x 3 1/2". The Deck includes 52 Playing Cards and a Joker. The Card fronts of the Aces and court cards each feature photographic portraits of famous actresses and actors of the American Stage. The Joker features a portrait of Marshall P. Wilder (1859-1915) the famous actor who was one of the first persons with a disability to become a celebrity on his own terms. The Deck offered here is identified by collectors as the “Alternate” version of The Stage Playing Cards with the denomination of the Jacks, Queens and Kings printed inside the suit symbol. Both versions were published from 1896 until sometime around 1900.
This wonderful, Complete Deck of 1896 Stars of the American Stage Playing Cards is in very good condition. The Deck of Cards itself is exceptionally well preserved – complete and as issued. All of the Cards are clean and crisp with no creases, tears, physical damage or significant wear of any king. The gold gilt edges are well preserved and the Cards show signs of very light wear only. The cards exhibit light wear from use but overall are exceptionally well preserved. The Deck retains a partial original slip-case box – the inner sleeve of the Box is intact and sound while the outer slip case lacks the top and one side panel. The back panel is present but detached and there is wear to the side panel that is present.
A wonderful and quite rare, original 1896 Complete Deck of American Actors and Actresses of the Theatrical Stage Playing Card featuring photographic portraits of 65 different stars of the American Theater and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
