Shchedryk" (Ukrainian: Shchedryk, from Shchedry vechir, "Plentiful Evening") is a Ukrainian schedrovka, or New Year's song, known in English as "Little Swallow". It was arranged by the composer and teacher Nikolai Leontovich in 1916 and tells the story of a swallow that flew into the house to sing of the wealth that will come with next spring. Initially, "Shchedryk" was sung on the night of January 13, on New Year's Eve according to the Julian calendar (December 31, old style ), that is, Generous Vechir. The first performances of the work were made by students of Kyiv University.

"Shchedryk" was later adapted by Peter J. Wilhousky as the English Christmas carol "Carol of the Bells" following a performance of the original song by the Oleksandr Koshetz Ukrainian National Choir at Carnegie Hall on October 5, 1922. Wilhousky is copyrighted and published . his new lyrics (which were not based on Ukrainian lyrics) in 1936, and the song became popular in the US and Canada, where it became strongly associated with Christmas.

2022 marks the centenary of the North American premiere of "The Generous" (known to the world as "Carol of the Bells") at New York's Carnegie Hall. This Christmas classic has captured the American imagination through film and television - Home Alone and The Muppets, Coca-Cola commercials. And also through the performance of carols by the most diverse groups: NBA players, the American rock band "Trans-Siberian Orchestra", the Choir of the Mormon Tabernacle and many others.
The concert at Carnegie Hall on October 5, 1922 was part of the first project of Ukrainian cultural diplomacy - the world tour of the Ukrainian Republican Chapel under the leadership of the famous musician Oleksandr Koshyts. The chapel was created at the initiative of the UNR government and sent abroad to promote Ukrainian independence in Europe and America and counter Russian propaganda. The tour took place under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Arts and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Ukrainian People's Republic, and in North America alone they gave more than 200 concerts in large halls and universities.
