Antique Dondorf Wahrsage-Karte #1so called variant#2
by Dondorf made for the French market as
No. 1 Cartes de Bonne Aventure
Quoting one of the most resourceful websites on cards, DXPO Playing Cards:
"
Between ca. 1873 and 1933 the company of Bernard Dondorf has printed and published a fortune telling deck in the style and method of Madame Lenormand. It was published as "Wahrsage-Karten Nr. 1". The deck comes with a small booklet in which the cards and the way to lay them are explained. This booklet exists in several languages: in German of course, but also in French, Dutch, Danish, Italian and Portuguese. (...)
In his book about the Dondorf company Franz Braun distinguishes 4 variations. The oldest one, variation #1, has the company name and place in white letters in a lilac, and later on in a dark purple or black circle. Variation #2 has a white circle with the company's name and place in black. The place is written as Francfort. In the third variation, here below, this name was replaced by Frankfurt."
The present variant is variant#2.We are indicating year circa 1904 as the latest as the box (or whatever unfortunately remained from it), as well as the blue booklet still bear company's logo and name still spelled B. Dondorf Francfort am Main without GmbH i.e. limited type of company which Dondorf became in 1905.
The deck is complete (36 cards).
Square Corners
The cards are in spectacular MINT conditions. Most probably they have spent over 100 years of their life mostly in their box which is falling apart.

*In describing the condition of the cards we offer, we use the method suggested in the Hochman Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards as follows: Mint = as new and unused. Excellent = Possibly used but showing no sign of wear and in first class condition. Good = A clean deck showing signs of use but no serious damage. No tears or creases. We also use intermediate grading where applicable such as “near excellent” ,“near mint” or “very good”. The latter ones are usually used for the cards being over 100 years old since the condition may be age related and since the cards themselves are simply made of paper. All our items are professionally graded, meticulously described and depicted which is reflected in our excellent feedback. The pictures in our listings are not enhanced in any manner.
